The International Committee for Study of Bauxite, Alumina & Aluminium (ICSOBA), was formed in 1963 in Zagreb (Yugoslavia), and during the past decades it has become a prominent and truly international organization. The main objective of ICSOBA is to promote the exchange of ideas and results of work from different fields of research and current practice related to bauxite exploration and exploitation, and alumina and aluminium production, from different geographical areas. Since 1963 about 30 ICSOBA Events - symposiums, congresses and seminars - were organized in different parts of the world and a TRAVAUX volume of each conference proceedings was published.

ICSOBA is a non-profit association, that is legally registered with Corporations Canada under number 802906-7, and has an executive administration office in India. It unites industry professionals representing major bauxite, alumina and aluminium producing countries of the world.

The last ICSOBA Event was the Bauxite Residue Seminar held in Goa, India, during October 17 to 19 2011.
Over 130 delegates from 23 countries were assembled to present and discuss 40 papers on the topics: 1) Bauxite residue characterisation, 2) the present processing, handling, storage and treatment of bauxite residue in various alumina refineries in the world, 3) environmental and safety considerations of storage of mud and rehabilitation of storage areas, 4) best practices for mud handling, storage, treatment and utilization, 4)research and development in the field of mud utilization as feed stock for other applications.
Technical papers were published in the Travaux volume 36, 2011, No 40.
At the end of the seminar the draft Summary and Conclusions document was discussed, and the final version of this document is to be published in the December 2011 ICSOBA Newsletter.
The majority of the delegates opted to participate in the field trip after the seminar to the rehabilitated storage area of Hindalco's Belgaum refinery.

The last ICSOBA full symposium was held in Zhengzhou China during November 25 to 28, 2010 with the co-operation of CHALCO’s R&D Centre. The topic of the symposium was 'Overview of Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium Industry worldwide with special reference to China'. The Symposium attracted close to 300 delegates, with more than half of them from outside China. 78 Technical papers were published in the TRAVAUX volume. Special emphasis has been given to the papers received from China, thereby ensuring that the TRAVAUX issue reflects the significant contributions of the Chinese aluminium industry. During the symposium, papers were presented simultaneously in English and Chinese by parallel beaming. Technical papers were presented in 3 parallel sessions of bauxite, alumina and aluminium smelting / downstream. The ICSOBA China symposium was sponsored by a number of companies including Hatch (Canada), Lanzhou LS Heat Exchange Equipment Co., Ltd (China), Nalco (China) and Environmental Solutions Co., Ltd. The Co-sponsors were DUBAL (UAE) and Vedanta (India). An exhibition was also organised and symposium was followed by the visit to CHALCO's bauxite beneficiation plant, alumina refinery and aluminium smelters.

ICSOBA also publishes for its members a half yearly Newsletter, which consists of technical papers, news & views and diary of events.

Two major events are planned:
- the 2012 ICSOBA symposium in Brazil, in co-operation with ABM, Associação Brasileira de Metalurgia, Materiais e Mineração, and ABAL, Associação Brasileira de Aluminio, 6 to 9 November in Belem.
- the 2013 celebration of the 50^thAnniversary of ICSOBA in Russia, in co-operation with the International Congres and Exhibition Non-Ferrous Metals to held September in Krasnoyarsk.
